2nd Workshop "Figs for the Future: maximizing orchard yield to market"

Updated: Oct 23

The second workshop "Figs for the Future: Maximizing Orchard Yield to Market" took place on July 19th in Torres Novas, as part of the project InovFarmer.MED

This event, organized in partnership by Food4Sustainability, the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu, GOFigo, and the Municipality of Torres Novas, aimed to bring together various stakeholders from the Torres Novas region, including producers, industry representatives, and government authorities. Focusing on figs produced in this region, the discussions centered around (re)thinking and exploring business opportunities available to producers, with an emphasis on post-harvest stages and figs that, after picking and calibration, cannot be sold as fresh fruit.

The event was held at the Torres Novas Municipal Library and featured a sensory tasting of dried figs, a presentation on innovative technology for drying fresh figs, and concluded with a dynamic discussion among the participants, giving them a platform to voice their opinions on the future of their businesses.

About the InovFarmer.MED Project | Recognizing that environmental and social changes are profoundly affecting Euro-Mediterranean agri-food systems, and that the COVID-19 outbreak, with its movement restrictions, highlighted the fragility of Mediterranean food systems—already stressed by climate change, population growth, and resource scarcity—the InovFarmer.MED consortium developed a capacity-building strategy to address producers' vulnerabilities, particularly those of small farmers, establishing resilience measures to face these challenges. InovFarmer.MED focuses on two traditional agri-food products with significant economic potential and social importance for small farmers in the Mediterranean basin as case studies: figs (Ficus carica) and prickly pear (Opuntia ficus indica). InovFarmer.MED is part of the PRIMA MED Program, supported by the European Union, Consortium Agreement number 1733.
