On the 31st of July, the Raiana Fair hosted an inspiring awareness activity in collaboration with the In-Salads and MEDEAT_BB projects, dedicated to promoting sustainable food and enhancing the Mediterranean diet. The initiative captured the attention of over 20 children, who, donned in aprons, eagerly “got their hands dirty” and actively prepared a delicious salad made with local and seasonal produce.
The event was filled with fun and learning, with participants picking fresh and healthy ingredients directly from the fair’s garden. Guided by the project teams, the children prepared a "Watermelon and Mint Salad", a recipe that embodies the spirit of In-Salads: healthy, sustainable, and based on the principles of the Mediterranean diet.
In addition to preparing the salad, the experience provided an opportunity to teach the importance of choosing seasonal and local foods, promoting balanced and sustainable eating habits. The prepared recipe included typical Mediterranean ingredients such as watermelon, cucumber, mint, goat cheese, and toasted almonds, in a refreshing and nutritious combination. This hands-on experience inspired the younger generation to explore new flavors and increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables.
Watermelon and Mint Salad Recipe:
o 1 lemon
o 1 cucumber
o 1.5 kg of watermelon
o 250 g of fresh goat cheese
o 1 bunch of mint
o 50 g of unsalted toasted almonds
o 2 tablespoons of olive oil
o 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar
This type of initiatives is essential to educating future generations about the importance of healthy eating, while also emphasising the need to preserve food traditions and understand the seasonality of produce. The fresh and delicious salad was the final result of a collaborative and educational activity, aligned with the goals of the represented projects.
