Why does an apple a day keeps the doctor away?

So the saying goes. But where does this ability of apples to keep us away from doctors come from?

Let's look in detail at this widely known, and so tasty, fruit!

We can consume apples throughout the entire year. From May to July although there is no picking, it is possible to find it for sale because it can be stored under refrigeration without loss of nutrients.

It is a versatile fruit that can be eaten raw, with or without peel, cooked, in desserts (pies, jams, jellies) or as an accompaniment in savoury dishes (apple puree). It is also used in the production of juices, fruit smoothies, cider and some brandies.

As for its composition, we highlight vitamins A, C, E and B9, better known as folic acid.

Of the minerals, its content in potassium, phosphorus and magnesium stands out. This mineral has more than 300 functions in the human body - perhaps the most relevant function is its fundamental role in the relaxation of muscle fiber.

Its fiber content, especially pectin - soluble fiber - makes it a good food that aids intestinal transit.

The apple is also rich in flavonoids, of which we highlight quercetin and fisetin. Fisetin, considered more potent than quercetin, is a member of the flavonoid family and is present in relatively high concentrations in strawberries, apples, and blueberries, and in smaller quantities in persimmons, grapes, onions, and cucumbers.

Fisetin has a recognised anti-cancer, and anti-senescent action. It is a powerful cleansing agent for leaching out excess senescent cells in the human body.

Since fisetin is a natural product found in foods, available as a dietary supplement, and has no reported adverse side effects, studies suggest that fisetin can be widely recommended and may have a significant health benefit for seniors.

Perhaps stating that with one apple a day we can keep away from doctors is bold, but there is evidence that with dietary supplementation in fisetin, it is possible to take a higher dose than that found in one apple a day. Maybe that's the way to go, without ever neglecting a good diet: it's fundamental if we want long-term health.
